Our clients recently purchased this townhouse, nestled in a leafy street on Sydney’s North Shore that’s renowned for its heritage homes. There was a wish to retain its sense of character whilst elevating the dated interiors, combining comfort, elegance and timelessness. We began to replenish every room, creating a luxurious home for our clients to savour.

We wove together a warming colour and finishes palette, beginning with warm white for walls and ceilings, then layering linen, limestone and quartzite, and handcrafted Moroccan Zellige tiles for pleasing texture. Deep chestnut tones for the timber flooring, and bronze tapwear and fixtures throughout, deliver sophisticated contrast.

Wainscoting panelling was added to the formal living/dining room and continued upstairs in the hallway and master bedroom, aligning with the existing classic features: the original iron staircase balustrade, and Tuscan-style column. The formality of the living room was enhanced by the redesign of the fireplace, framed in Taj Mahal quartzite, and finished with Venetian plaster for subtle texture. Sheer drapes let the light filter into the space, and spill into the formal dining area. Here, a custom-made sideboard with organic oval pulls, the sculptural pendant light, and linen look Roman blinds create an elegant space to share meals with friends and family.

From a layout perspective, there was space to save and functionality to incorporate. We re-designed the existing confines of the kitchen, creating a slender island bench, and a comfortable, informal dining area for cosy meals together. The finishes of the kitchen, including the gentle shine of the Moroccan Zellige tiles, cultivate a sense of serenity that continues into the comfortable informal loungeroom. The under-stair space was carefully utilised, now home to a coffee nook with shelves for eclectic items, and appliance integrating cabinetry to minimise visual clutter.

We re-located the laundry, allowing it to serve as both laundry and powder room, all hidden behind a subtle, sliding barn door to save precious space. Here, the soft green cabinetry lends a gentle wash of colour, and the floors are finished in a cabochon pattern, created from natural marble. Classic-style bronze tapwear and an organic-shaped, black frame mirror lend a dash of contrast.

To let the light flood into the home, we added skylights to the master bedroom, upstairs bathrooms and above the staircase. The master bedroom exudes aesthetic calm and refinement, with spacious custom wardrobes ensuring everything has its perfect place. The ensuite features Taj Mahal quartzite adorning a curved edge vanity, Moroccan Zellige tiles in ‘latte’ and tumbled limestone pavers – all softening the space. A bronze Smith & Smith sconce light adds a touch of the ‘new’ to complement the classic.

The main bathroom has a light-filled bathing area. The bath, encased in the richly patterned quartzite, brings a sense of grounding, allowing for luxurious relaxation.

With heritage features effortlessly complementing contemporary elements, this space now embodies timeless design. We hope our clients enjoy their tranquil home, both as a restful haven and a beautiful space to entertain those they love.

“Leah, Fliss and the Bone Made team are absolute perfection. We worked with the team from concept all the way through to styling and it couldn't have been a more creative, professional and fun experience. The entire process was seamless, and we are ecstatic with the final result. It is better than we could have imagined. From the layout to the creative choices, documentation, and consultation during the build phase, Bone Made were reliable and knowledgeable. The communication from Leah and Fliss was right on point. We couldn't be more thankful to Bone Made for creating the home of our dream. Can't wait to use them on our next project.”
