Seaview House
Concept Humble Coastal
This spacious family home was designed by Matthew Power at sketchArc, and it was our intention to honour his architectural vision. We added thoughtful, functional design details, creating a calm haven to hold a very busy family of five.
As it sits close to the water, and the concept for the home was distilled to ‘humble coastal’ – a serene space with a neutral colour palette, touches of earthy texture and a sense of every element being refined to a simple essence. Our scope encompassed the entirety of the house, enabling an effortless cohesion of elements throughout.
The foundational palette began with bright, crisp white walls and ‘Smoked Grey’ engineered timber floors, complimented with translucent bespoke drapery. A beautiful feature wall, clad in freeform Bodega stone, introduces a warm, tactile aspect – spanning from the outside entrance into the entry way, and wrapping around the living room and hall. Subtle illumination was added to highlight the nuance of the stonework. A butler’s pantry is nestled behind this wall to provide a discreet preparation area when entertaining.
To elevate the experience of meals shared with family and friends, the kitchen was to have a feeling of simplicity, clean lines and spaciousness. We designed refined, custom-made cabinetry that was finished in a warm white, and paired with a subtly dappled porcelain slab for the splashback and waterfall benchtops. Ample storage ensures surfaces can remain pleasingly clear, with sparse open shelves allowing for the display of cherished items. An appreciation of entertaining is also reflected in the walk-in wine room. Through the melding of carefully utilised, paneled walls and the warmth of wood and rattan, the wine room becomes a sophisticated display element.
Both the living and bedroom areas were designed with an ardent respect for calm refinement. In the master bedroom, we designed distinctly minimalistic walk-in robe cabinetry. Rattan brings soft texture to a paired back aesthetic, with all shelves artfully hidden to preserve order. A clean-lined, cushioned bench seat with storage capacity spans the master bedroom window, allowing a soft space to rest and observe the comings and goings of the bay below.
For the open plan living and dining area, reeded palm pendants emanate textured light, and infuse a little hint of island life. The recurring motif of warm timber providing a delicious counterpoint to clean white is highlighted again in the deep frames that adorn the living room windows. The windows bookend a wall dressed in v-groove paneling that houses a sleek gas fireplace, perfect for creating a cozy space in the winter months.
As this family grows and transforms, we hope that their inner sanctum provides a timeless sense of spaciousness and peace.
