We recently had the joy of re-imagining this mid-century house. It’s home to a dynamic family of four, originally from Canada. With one member of the family being an archeologist, it was clear that committing to one era was not going to satisfy. This space needed to reflect the richness of their shared experiences, appreciation of history, and eclectic style.

Our clients’ time spent living in Greece, a love for Japanese design, mid-century and the ‘European cottage feel’ styles presented a vast palette to work with. This was an enjoyable challenge, as we worked to find harmonious cohesion. Already, Action Plans had re-drafted the floor plan. They re-orientated and extended the home to allow for more space and function. The kitchen, living and dining areas were opened up, and a unique, mid-century style raked ceiling was designed to subtly define each space. We accentuated this feature with the warmth of dark wood panels, weaving the expanse together with a striking focal point. A generous outdoor area, home office and an ensuite for the master bedroom were also created.

Our first focus was the kitchen, which needed a hint of Greek island charm. The custom joinery was finished in a quintessential powder blue, creating a hint of coastline and sky. Limestone-look, Japanese-style tiles brought speckled earthy detailing to the splashback. Their soft blue, mauve, off-white and grey tones framing the kitchen window. Rustic bronze finishes were chosen for the tapware and hardware, with ‘Carrara Marble’ by Talostone adorning the kitchen benchtops and multi-function square island. The island top was given a Cove Dupont/Ogee profile, lending a traditional element to the space. We also introduced a refined bar nook, for the cocktail hour, with plenty of space for glassware and treasured objects.

The entire space was lifted with the addition of skylights and highline windows, allowing light to pour through. The wood panelling on the ceiling provides a cozy cottage-feel, matched to much-loved furniture pieces, and contrasting with the limestone-look floor tiles. Double layer fabric wall lights with bronze detailing throughout the home, and fabric pendant lights delineating the dining and lounge areas, bring touches of Japanese style. Custom-made doors with rattan panels continue this theme, adding warm texture to the hallway and complimenting the blonde wood floors.

Each bathroom has its own distinct character with recurring elements flowing through from the living areas. An earthy palette was chosen for the main bathroom, with a clean-lined walnut vanity, and a dash of moody colour in the ‘Irish Moss’ floor tiles. These contrast with Tierra Nieve tiles in their cloudy sky tones, and the matte-white vanity top. Bronze tapware remains consistent from kitchen to bathrooms; paired with black framed mirror cabinets that provide a hidden depository for everyday items. A simple black sconce with frosted glass softens the light. The combined elements create a calm and grounded space to tend to self-care.

Overall, there is now a beautiful balance of elements throughout the space, with recurring motifs to enhance cohesion. Our clients’ home reflects the bowerbird qualities of a rich and full life – all of the special pieces and memories collected and reflected in a haven bursting with heart. We thank them for the privilege of this incredibly enjoyable collaboration.
